iCloud 7.8 and 7.9 for Windows 10 keep asking for password

If like me, you’re getting fed up of seeing this Window every time you log into Windows 10, read on.

Windows 10 October 2018 update has been a pure joy (sarcasm) if you jumped on early. Amongst the many problems was the Apple iCloud software stopping working.

If the constant annoyance of being asked for account password, and entering the 2 factor authentication login wasn’t enough, photo downloads and bookmark integration with other browsers was also broken.

Apple, with the help of Microsoft apparently ( https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4464619/windows-10-update-history scroll down to Nov 27) , finally fixed this on November 27th 2018 with the release of 7.8.1, this was followed up in early December by 7.9.0

However, problems were not resolved for me, probably because I was an early adopter of the Win 10 October 2018 update, before it got re-released. I was still being bugged by the constant annoyance of being asked to log in each time I logged into my computer.

I finally found a solution embedded deep in the Apple discussion forums. Normally I won’t write articles on information that’s already out on the web, but as this was difficult to find, I thought it was worth a full post.

First thing’s first, uninstall iCloud.

1. Type control panel after hitting the windows logo or the search button in the task bar and click on it.
2. Select programs and features
3. Find iCloud and click change.
4. Choose remove and click next.
5. Click yes to completely remove.
6. Click finish
7. Next find your download of iCloud for Windows (or download it again from https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204283)

Right click the download and select properties

8. Click the compatibility tab and tick the check box for compatibility mode and select Windows 7.

Click OK.

9. Right click the iCloud installer again, and this time choose run as administrator (even if you are already logged in as an admin user)
10. Follow the prompts as normal to install, and you should now have a fully working iCloud client again that happily auto logs in after each restart of your PC. Hurrah!

  • I had the same issue and found out, that on my PC the 7.9 update was installed imcomplete.
    The icloud panel showed 7.9 but if I opened the properties of some files like “iCloudServices.exe” and “iCloudServices_main.dll” in dir “C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Internet Services” the version was 7.8.1.xx.
    I extracted the “icloud setup.exe”, then “icloud.msi” and “icloud.cab” and found th 7.9 versions of those files.
    After copying those files to the correct directory and a reboot, I got no more questions for the password and all that without a complete uninstall and re-install of the software.
