Images for Commercial Use E.g E-commerce/Catalogues/Magazine spreads/Adverts/Print media
- If you want to use imagery for thing’s such as social media ads, magazine ads, newspaper ads, bus stop ads, billboard ads, e-commerce, print catalogues, shop windows etc you need to purchase additional image usage rights from the copyright holder. The photographer!
- Many organisations don’t realise that the photographer retains copyright to all images they produce. That is of course unless there is an agreement in the contract that buys out the copyright, which is also an option but extremely expensive. When organisations don’t outright purchase the copyright of the images they instead should be purchasing image usage rights from the photographer. This is the photographer allowing the business to use the images for a defined purpose, usually over an agreed amount of time. When the period of time is up the business must stop using the image or purchase additional image usage rights should they wish to continue using the image for a specified purpose. Buying image usage rights if you know you will only be using the image for a defined period of time is usually much cheaper than attempting to buyout full copyright of the images.
- The cost of usage rights will vary depending on numerous factors, such as for how long they are to be used for advertising purposes and the media in which they will be used. Each project is different and it’s impossible to give ballpark figures without first having a discussion. Upon the discussion a quote can then be given on the value for the shoot depending on its purpose. All images from the shoot will be covered for the usage rights. Photographers use an industry standard calculator to work out the image usage right costings so that the costings are fair and standardised across the sector, with the only variable being the photographers session cost.
- Image usage rights are priced per session, not per image. So the longer the session the more expensive the image usage rights will become, because naturally you’ll have more images to choose from or because the session was more technically difficult therefore required more time and skill to setup. Below is 2 examples at extreme ends of the scale. Take into account buying out full copyright from the photographer would be significantly more expensive than the image usage rights prices listed below
- A 2 hour session, the organisation has asked for image usage rights for 1 year, to use on social media ads, within the UK only. At time of writing this would be an additional £232 on the quote provided.
- An 8 hour photographic studio session to allow extra time for setting up complex shooting environment and then disassembling, with an organisation that has asked for image usage rights for 1 year, to use on print media advertising, such as bus stops, and shop window posters. They also wish to use the digital images for internet advertising across a number of channels such as social media, ad networks & e-mail campaigns. They wish to use the images across the UK and EU member countries. At time of writing this would be an additional £14,880 on the quote provided.
